Ralph Nader was born in Winstead, Connecticut. He graduated from Princeton University in 1955 and Harvard Law School in 1958. Nader was then hired as a staff consultant on highway safety for the assistant secretary of labor. In 1965 he published Unsafe at Any Speed, a book that attacked the safety records of the auto industry. Nader founded many consumer action groups, such as the Center for Study of Responsive Law, Corporate Accountability Research Group, and Public Citizen, Inc. In 1980 he became president of the Public Citizen Foundation. Throughout his career, Nader has campaigned for consumer rights and protection. He made an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. presidency in 1996.
